the original general store

growing up on long island, we went to this general store...with the screen door slamming, the coke cooler on the porch, we rode our bikes to get popsicles and our neighbors who had horses, rode down and tied up on the posts to get the newspapers for their dad, check the bulletin board for babysitting jobs...my brother remembers that they had the best penny candy at the counter.

it was a sad day when it was torn down and replaced with a chain gas station.
i remember this as a center of our community, a place where neighbors gathered, news shared, a place that kids went to when ice cream was a treat...this is the spirit of the new general store, where friends and neighbors gather a couple of times a year to have lunch or a cup of cider, to gather by the river and watch the swans in spring, or by the fire in fall to catch up on what's happening...a place to see old friends and meet new ones. and its also a place to be in touch on line with our events, local products for sale, and a way to connect.

using recycled industrial materials and new electrical fittings, a Texan designer created a collection of lights that are great for a loft or farmhouse!

we had a beautiful sunny day on long island for our 3rd annual holiday event and lots of old friends and new friends came by to visit and shop ...we had stocking stuffers from $1-10, hostess gifts under $25, great gift ideas for the gardener and chef...

the white shop was the first stop filled with a vintage college of ironstone, paperwhites and The Laundress household collection + paperwhite candles

vintage linens, birdhouses, teasets were also in the winter white shop inspired by Holiday with Matthew Mead who used this old chicken coop and turned it into a winter wonderland with beautiful decorations and tea sets

Matthew Mead and Jane Cumberbatch were our celebrity guests this time, signing their new books and meeting their fans... Jane sold all her books by lunchtime! You can still buy her Pure Style book series on Amazon as well as her new one called Easy Recipes which she has kindly adapted with American measurements

spicy pumpkin soup menu...proceeds from our soup kitchen went to buy bulbs to plant in the historic district ...can't wait to see all the white daffodils blooming this spring along main street!

outdoor table with firepit and blankets... a good spot to enjoy soup and cookies made by michael jones...spiced pumpkin (a theme here) and walnut shortbread...hope all who came had a great time, and if you couldn't make it, check out our online shop and we'll be posting more photos of the event and the new general store gift suggestions for the season!

Our friends from The Laundress, Gwen, Lindsey, and Gelina came out to Long Island to visit and we had a great lunch at the boathouse using our new line of serving pieces from Barbara Eigen, teak salad plates, our stemless glasses and water jug...The citrus and mint salts were a big hit, and they loved the rosemary olive oil we used for the salad and roast chicken! I grew up in a small town on Long Island when it was rural and we had an old white general store with wood floors that creaked and a screen door that slammed and 2 gas pumps outside. We would go to pick up the newspapers every morning and pick up milk when we ran out, and treat ourselves to popsicles on hot summer days... there was a bulletin board with things for sale, babysitting and lawn mowing jobs posted and there was always a bench outside for neighbors to sit and visit, wait out the rain, sit in the shade...This ritual and icon in our community has been the inspiration for our new general store ...hope you'll visit us on-line on your own bench and enjoy our website, where we have pictures of friends visiting our sales and finding great things for their homes today!

we have packs of 12 white sponges and big chunks of natural olive oil soap from marseilles for our spring offerings...we like to put liquid ivory soap in vintage bottles, carafes or wine bottles with pour spouts to make dishwashing more pleasurable!

the farmstand down the road is stocked up with plants for sale for easter...just loaded up my trunk with white daffodils, hyacinths, tulips and easter lilies to put all around the house...i bought pots of purple hyacinths and grape hyacinths for my family to bring for easter lunch...we are getting in our garden supplies and gifts for our pop-up event on may 21st !

our signature market bag in burlap with jute strap, is plastic lined, the perfect carry-all...I use it for groceries, laundry, recycling, plants, flea market shopping, road trips...it's lightweight, waterproof, and spacious...i discovered these bags years ago and used them for photo shoots and always kept a stash of them in my car...
